Ryoji Ikeda, an artist and musician, has received attention with his works crossing between visual media and auditory media. <test pattern [n 8]>(2015) submitted for the festival realizes the system which converts data such as text, sound, photo, and video into a barcode method and a binary system of 0 and 1. This system aims at exploring relationship between the critical point of equipment performance and the limit of human beings.

The work is composed of the process in which real-time sound wave types are transformed into visual patterns, 8 DLP projectors, 2 computers, and 16 speakers. The speed of moving images is super high, and they are accumulated as hundreds of sheets of data, and equipment performance and perception response of audience are test together. This visual system which converts data such as text, sound, photo, and video into high-speed barcode patterns awakens new senses by inviting audience into a space which is visualized in black and white stripes.

Ryoji Ikeda has proceeded long-term projects such as ‹Data matix›(2006~), ‹Test pattern ›(2008~), ‹Spectra ›(2001~), ‹Superposition›(2012~) by covering various media such as live performance, installation, publication, and CD along with music activities. He has shown performances and exhibitions in many institutions around the world such as Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Singapore Museum of Art, Linz Ars Electronica Center, New York Park Avenue Armory, London Barbican Center, Madrid Telefonica Foundation, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and won Prix Ars Electronica Collide Residency in 2014.
