Hartland Quay, North Devon

This work by Alan Cotton depicts the remains of the ancient quay and the bay with its spectacular cliffs. This former harbour which dates back to the time of Henry VIII is subject to some of the roughest winter seas.

Cotton’s use of impasto, high colour and purity of pigment is evident in this work.

Alan Cotton’s distinctive technique makes use of the palette knife to apply flat areas of colour. He is primarily a landscape painter but also a writer and teacher on arts and crafts. Now living in East Devon, Alan has written of his own work: ...the painting process is always a voyage of discovery. With each new work you should be thrilled with the prospect of actually applying the paint and discovering where you are going, not only with the combination of colours and range of marks, but with the tapestry of the surface which allows you to convey the idea which inspired you and set you off on the path.
