Palmer's artistic development was largely the result of his association with the artists John Linnell (1792 - 1882), John Varley (1778 - 1842), William Blake (1757 - 1827), William Mulready 1786 - 1863) and George Richmond 1809 - 1896). The influence of Blake and Varley was particulary strong.

Palmer began to etch quite late in his career. This print was made the year before he died.
