Earrings – but no pierced ears

This garniture was probably sold as a complete set. It contains earrings but Wilhelmina did not have pierced ears, although this was common at the time.

With its origins dating far back in time, the enamel ornamentation was widely used during the new revivalist styles of the 19th century. The striped pattern was created by filling the spaces between the fine gold threads with black enamel – so-called cloisonné enamelling.
