This bow brooch has a dense surface patterning of spirals (known as ‘cannetille’ work) and granules (‘grainti’). This decoration was very popular in the decades around 1830. Jewellery from these decades was often vibrantly coloured, and turquoise was a popular choice. The brooch survives with matching earrings, with which it would have been worn.
