From the nave you cannot see the whole church. In both western and eastern directions, the view of the choir rooms is blocked by partitions. These partitions are called choir barriers or rood screens. In the Middle Ages, the choir rooms behind the rood screen were reserved for the high priesthood during the divine service, while the laymen in the nave followed the divine service.
