The sculpture was executed for the chapel of the Giulini Della Porta Barbiano di Belgiojoso family at Usmate-Velate in Brianza. The sculptor emphasises the human suffering of Christ and shows an exhausted man, far from any idea of beauty and divine power. The terrestrial fragility with which Vela depicted the Son of God drew high criticism. A copy of this work stands on Vela's tomb in Ligornetto.
