Began to be made in the 1970s, the “Ecriture” series by PARK Seobo(1931- ) maintained a particular palette and technique until 1982 since when it has undergone a progressive transformation as Park has varied his use of such materials as hanji and water-based paints. Ecriture No. 991004 (1999), one of his later Ecriture works, shows a picture plane that goes much further toward heightened constraint and abstinence. The all-overness and repetitiveness of vertical patterns strengthen the strictness of the picture plane, and its indescribable sense of depth and calm owes itself to Park’s impeccable understanding of the materials used and decades of ascetic practice of repetition.
