As a paid municipal physician in Luxembourg from 1845 to 1848, Aschman devotes a certain number of office hours to caring for the poor. In 1847, he briefly joins the Freemason lodge, where he belongs to the "young" guard, which advocates for social progress but opposes universal suffrage due to the alleged lack of political maturity among the lower classes.
