C+S is an Italian studio working in the area around Venice, in those places tourists will never visit but where most people live. This region, the product of urban sprawl and heavy industrial development, is not exactly known for its architectural quality. So, when looking at contemporary Italian architecture, what immediately captures our attention are some of C+S’s projects designed precisely for this kind of periphery. Their buildings, ranging from programs for public institutions to infrastructure in the countryside, stand out thanks to their clear formal presence, their resonance with archetypal historical typologies, their capacity to integrate into the always charged Italian context, and their ability to build and construct public space.
In this exhibition, their focus is on schools, where their search is to break with the convention of buildings as shuttered boxes, transforming the school into an open structure, open to and promoting the meeting of and between people. In other words, the school is given over to the active participation of the communities it is a part of.
