The motive for Linas Jusionis painting Education is borrowed from Lindsey Anderson movie If, in which the film director mocks the order of British public schools. In this painting the viewer sees the fragment of a playground. In what way this fragment is special?
The design of the painting is made of several rectangulars laid out in various directions. One rectangular can be seen in the very front – this object is similar to some kind of barrier. Other rectangulars are formed of white stripes marking the landmarks of the playground. Behind the boundaries of the playground we see blank, geometrical walls. The whole painting is made of strict geometrical forms. Everything is cold, sterile and dead. Nonetheless planes and lines intersect in such a way that the painting gives the impression of changeable picture. It seems as if you are on this side of the playground and you are running by the periphery. This impression is not accidental: Linas Jusionis showed a lot of interest in films (especially films made by director Michelangelo Antonioni) and applied Michelangelo’s manner of representation in his paintings.
Boundaries – the most important thing in any game. They discipline your body and help to obey the rules. That is what the name of the painting “Upbringing” indicates. Railings, fields, football gates and other objects related with sports are often met in the works of this artist.
