In 1899 Edwin Landseer Lutyens (1869-1944) was introduced to the Hon. E. W. B. (‘Teddy’) Portman (1859-1911) and his wife, Constance Mary Lawley (1951), by client and magazine owner, Edward Hudson (1854-1936). The successful publisher repeated this practice with other affluent friends and associates, but also furthered Lutyens’ career by publishing articles on his work in Hudson’s popular mass-market periodical, Country Life (est. 1897).
