Flowing Water

Yokoyama Taikan1950

Adachi Museum of Art

Adachi Museum of Art
Yasugi, Shimane, Japan

This work expresses a rich river, with a heavy flow of water. Taikan carefully depicted the spray of the water, and formed rolling waves using a unique stylized design. Among his many expressions of water, this is particularly memorable. In the golden sky, a wagtail flies. Viewers get a sense of looking into another world through this fantasy landscape. This work was produced for the 35th re-established Inten. Taikan donated his prize money to Inten in the same year, after which Inten established the "Taikan Award".
