Still lifes, particularly of certain fruits and vegetables, were ripe subjects for Eileen’s brush. Eggplant was among her favorites. Eileen really liked this painting. Normally quite critical of her paintings and always eager to go in and change some aspect — even after many years have passed since she “completed” a painting — that was not the case with these eggplants. The solid pair takes on an almost lifelike presence, circularly embraced by what appear to be oranges, lemons, stems, and the shadow of a pear. A cozy, balanced composition of fruit, both static and lively.
