The Beaneater (Mangiafagioli)

A simple peasant or laborer eats at a table. With a wooden spoon, he greedily spoons white beans from a bowl. On the table are onions, bread, a plate with vegetable pie, a half-empty glass of wine, and an earthenware jug decorated with bright stripes. The whole image is simple and homely. The food, the man, his clothing, his coarse table manners, and his shifty look are all unappealing to the observer.
