On March 13, 1937, this bike broke the land-speed record, reaching 136.183 mph on the hard-packed sands of Daytona Beach, Florida. Motor Company founder William Harley proposed the event as a promotion for the recently released "Knucklehead" engine. The record-setting rider was Joe Petrali, already a legend in the racing world. Among his accomplishments: sweeping the 350cc single-cylinder division as a member of the 1935 Harley-Davidson team. In 1938, Petrali's career took an unexpected turn. He retired from racing and went to work for billionaire Howard Hughes on the infamous "Spruce Goose" airplane.
