The mounted eland is in a dying posture, as if it had just been shot with a poisoned arrow. Its legs collapse as it stumbles and its head is lowered, swaying from side to side. Many painted eland are portrayed in dying postures – and may symbolize a ritual or spiritual death rather than the real death of an eland.
