Designed as an opera house, the construction of the Atatürk Culture Center began in 1946. Due to a lack of funds, the construction remained incomplete until 1969, when it was finished by Architect Hayati Tabanlıoğlu. It was inaugurated as the İstanbul Culture Palace on 12 April 1969. The building sustained heavy damage when a fire broke out in 1970 and was not reopened until 1977, under the name 'Atatürk Culture Center.' As one of the symbols of modern culture, this institution served as the center of culture and fine arts in İstanbul for many years. The recommendation that it be demolished in 2005 concluded when the structure was registered as a 1st Group Cultural Asset, with the support of the fine arts and architectural platforms, the public and the press. Closed down due to repair work in 2008, the Atatürk Culture Center currently preserves its existence as an empty shell.
