Elizabeth Ware Fullwood Billups

Smith traveled as an itinerant portrait painter, from Cincinnati to New Orleans to Georgia, but little is known about his life. Billups and her husband (of whom the museum also owns a portrait by Smith) were early important residents of Clarke County, Georgia, where the University of Georgia is located. Her family owned the Eagle Tavern, in nearby Watkinsville, where the paintings hung for many years.
