A mining colony emerged in Elversberg in the second half of the 19th century. From 1842 to 1918, the principle of premium house construction was employed. More and more rooms and extensions were added over the course of the years to enable the housewife to be able to host additional miners. The wife of a miner often had a dual role. She was responsible for house and home and at the same time she acted as a host for external miners to whom she rented a small bedroom. The miner also had two roles, as he was obligated to help build his premium house. This meant that even more hours of hard work building the house followed the shifts at the mine.
