A preeminent African American woman sculptor, Meta Fuller created Emancipation in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. The allegorical sculpture depicts male and female figures that emerge from the tree of knowledge at the center of the sculpture. Emancipation is now on display in Harriet Tubman Park in Boston’s South End. The sculpture is co-owned with the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists.
