"One of Voltaire's biographers recognizes that “In fact, the publication of La Henriade marked the moment when Voltaire was finally recognized by his contemporaries as France's leading poet” (DAVIDSON, 2010, p. 42). The story presented in the poem takes place between the years 1588 and 1594, beginning with the Siege of Paris, led by Henry III and his brother-in-law, the Protestant Henry Bourbon, king of Navarre. The former was born in 1551, son of Henry II and Catherine di Medici, and went on to become govern France in 1574. Paris was one of the strongholds of the Catholic League or Holy League, formed in opposition to the Protestant Union." [MAGALHÃES, Pablo Antônio Iglesias.
