Embroidered Fragment Depicting Lions and Palmette

Embroidered entirely in counted stitch on silk gauze, the decorative scheme of lions and stylized vegetation seen on this silk fragment derives Persian designs. While several extant fragments are woven in very similar designs, this piece provides an unusual example of this pattern rendered in embroidery.
