Emerging Creative: Samkelisiwe Mhongo

Samkelisiwe Mhlongo's introduction into the world of fashion began at the Durban University of Technology, where she was completing her diploma in Fashion. Unfortunately due to many factors, she was unable to complete her studies, but this was unable to deter her passion for fashion design.

She eventually made the switch to creating designer leather bags. She Launched St. Reign, a minimalist leather bags brand, in 2017. Her timeless handcrafted bags are created using vegan leather and tanned using plant-based dyes, making her brand environmentally friendly.

As a one-woman operation, Mhlongo ensures that all the products she produces are of exceptional quality. When designing her bags, she draws her inspiration from everyday life. Mhlongo describes the brand as one for everyone who appreciates African luxury, a brand with a South African story.

Her most successful project to date is a collection she created which features bags named after prominent South African women. The collection was created in honour of these women, and the role they play in society.
