Enamel Organ

The teeth of a mammoth continued to grow. This was important because its teeth wore down very fast eating all that grass. The enamel organ was responsible for this process. This organ produced the individual parts of the mammoth molar, the lamellae. These individual lamellae later joined together in the molar formation.

The enamel organ is hidden deep in the mammoth’s jaw, which is why it cannot be seen in a whole jaw. The discovery of the organ is therefore extraordinary!
