Jakarta, Indonesia

The Balinese endek cloth is made with the use of ikat and songket (supplementary weaving) techniques. Its motifs incorporate typical Balinese Hindu design elements, like the wayang figures of the Ramayana that originated in India, and has become a favorite of the Balinese weavers.
This cloth shows Hanoman and Nagapasa fighting against Rahwana, who is assisted by his son, Indrajit. Endek cloth is only to be used by the nobility, and then only during ceremonial events, at the royal court or temple. It serves as a shoulder cloth, or breast cover.
