Endymione was the son of a Greek king and loved by Selene (Moon). Every night she would take advantage of his sleep to steal a kiss from him.
Zeus granted him eternal youth and plunged him into an eternal sleep on Mount Latmos where Selene would find him every night. Endymion is one of the recurring subjects in Baroque painting.
