Uniform cylindrical tube microscope with the eyepiece and lens at the ends. The bottom has a fine screw for microscopic focusing. The tube is screwed into an arm that extends from the top of the pillar. The pillar itself has an internal part that slides inside an external part using a rack mechanism, which is controlled by a side screw. This vertical movement is used for macroscopic focusing as it moves the lenses away from the sample on the stage. The stage is static and attached to the front of the pillar. It has a mechanical system to move samples around using 2 side screws. On the front is a channel into which a diaphragm can be inserted to control light intensity. At the bottom of the pillar is a plano-concave mirror on an arm which is, in turn, mounted on a metal ring that allows it to move in multiple directions. The whole instrument sits on a double triangular pedestal on top of a horseshoe-shaped base, with an inscription on the heel that reads: "Salmon. 100 Fenchurch St. London."
