The nautilus shell cup was much sought-after for 16th- and 17th- century cabinets of rarities. Scientific interest in exotic naturalia and artificialia was induced by the discovery of the New World around 1500.

Set in silver and silver-gilt mounts, the shiny pearl shell with its wonderful rainbow colours is transformed into a luxurious display piece. The shell is engraved with everyday scenes, like a man playing cards, for instance.
