The term "rock art" refers to artistic expressions on rocks. These can be classified as pictographs, where paint is used for the design, and petroglyphs, where the design is carved on the rock. In Uruguay, there have been dozens of rock art sites identified. In the northern part of the country there are mostly petroglyphs, prepared on previously smoothed rock surfaces, containing sinuous shapes, parallel lines and grouped points.
