African American Railroad Company founded by Harvey Cain in South Carolina
South Carolina Representatives—Joseph Rainey, Richard Cain, Alonzo Ransier, and Robert Smalls along with seven others, formed the Enterprise Railroad Company in 1870. The company transported freight by horse-drawn street railway between the Charleston, South Carolina wharves and the railroad depot. The Enterprise Railroad Company was the first and only black-owned railroad in the history of the United States.
