  • Artist information: Paris Bordone is known as an Italian Renaissance painter of the Venetian school. He was a pupil of Titian and created popular portraits of feature great complexity. In 1525-1526 he painted an altarpiece for the church in Crema, entitled Madonna with St. Christopher and St George. He also created several important mural paintings in various Italian cities, before being invited to France in 1538 by Francis I. Once there, he painted the king and leading figures of the nobility. His idealized female subjects are characterized by elegance and delicacy. 'Venus and Mars with Cupid' (1559-1560) is one of his best known artworks.
