Entrance Colonnade, Eltham Palace

English Heritage

English Heritage

Eltham's curved colonnade is flanked by two tall, copper clad pavilions wit models of chessmen on the roof ridges. The green-plated steel casement windows by Henry Hope and Son are typical of the 1930s. The in-filled arches of the colonnade are inspired by Hampton Court Palace and the library at Trinity College where the architects Seely and Paget attended. The junction between the 1930s building and the medieval great hall to the right is marked by a projecting staircase with a stone cap.
