The Import Docks were opened in 1802 and contained three-quarters of a mile of warehouses used to store goods imported from the plantations of the West Indies including sugar, rum, coffee and cocoa. During the 18th and 19th centuries many of the plantations profited from the labour of enslaved Africans. The gateway was removed in 1932 and the docks closed in 1980.
