Entrance of Patriarch Federico Corner into S. Pietro of Castello

Joseph Heintz the Jounger1649

Museo Correr

Museo Correr
Venice, Italy

This painting is part of the group of canvases donated to the Museo Correr by Conte Volpi di Misurata in 1937 and of a larger cycle nowadays disembodied and dating from 1648 to 1649, but referable to the Pamphilj family, as ancient owners of the works.
It depicts the entrance of Patriarch Federico Corner to San Pietro di Castello, a contemporary seat of the patriarchal cathedral until Napoleon's arrival, who transferred it to the Basilica of San Marco.
In the canvas we can recognize the patriarch, accompanied by the doge Francesco Erizzo and the ambassador of France D'Avaux at the entrance of the church, while all around, the scene is animated by the lively and brilliant festivities brought by the artist with a genuine attention to narrative detail and documentary rendering: gondola and "bissone" (traditional Venetian parachute boats) occupied by numerous figurines, hang on the lower part of the work showing the exceptional descriptive ability of the artist.
