This painting is a companion piece to the equestrian portrait of Charles Emmanuel II and of Victor Ama-deus II, also on display in this gallery. Maria Giovanna Battista was the wife and mother of the two riders portrayed by Giovanni Battista Brambilla.
The painting, which is a typically celebratory type of court portrait, takes from Charles Dauphin’s portrayal of Christine of France, now in the Castello di Racconigi (Turin), which has the same iconography and the same rhetoric, with the amazon-duchess unsheathing her sword and preceded by Fame, with a trumpet and laurel wreath.
