A sounder is a nautical instrument used to measure the depth below the boat, and the condition of the ocean floor. This is a conical instrument made from lead. It would have been secured to the sounding line at the corner, enabling it to hang overboard and descend to the ocean floor. It has a hole on the base which was greased in order for marine particles to stick to it.
