  • Description: Escritura Hurtado (Hurtado Writing) belongs to Jesús Rafael Soto’s celebrated Escritura series. Originally titled Escritura sobre gris oscuro (Writing on Dark Gray), Soto changed the title in recognition of Venezuelan painter Angel Hurtado, who was influential in the acquisition of the work at the Pan-American Union. The black wires of Escritura Hurtado, suspended in front of a striated panel by nylon cords, bear a similarity to script, yet Soto’s original intent with the series had been the suggestion of immateriality. Soto sought a metaphorical dissolution of the object through the influence of light, shadow, and especially movement. -Text by Mark Andrew White
