Madrid, Spain

This cutting sword was mainly used by students of the Company of Midshipmen. The weapons typically carried by the students, as stipulated in the Royal Decree of 1785, were a rifle, bayonet, and ceremonial sword. The latter was probably a type of cutting sword, either smaller in size for the younger guards, or of the type usually carried by officers in dress uniform and not meant for use in battle.
