Esraj, a combination of Sarangi and Sitar, is a popular string instrument of Punjab. It is bowed with a bow in a manner very similar to Sarangi. The Esraj is a modern variant of Dilruba and is widely used in Sikh and Hindustani classical music. It has twenty metal frets and the sitar like neck carries twelve to fifteen sympathetic strings. The soundboard is a stretched piece of goat skin, similar to Sarangi.
