Eternal Light Peace Memorial, Post-Civil War Era

Just outside of Gettysburg, to the northwest, is the Eternal Light Peace Memorial. In 1938, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt dedicated the Memorial at Gettysburg in remembrance of the 75th anniversary of the battle. The flame atop the monument was meant to signify eternal peace. This idea of an eternal flame was the inspiration for the grave of President John F. Kennedy at Arlington National Cemetery.
