The painting, once in the sacresty of the Certosa di Maggiano in the surroundings of Siena, shows the personal interpretation by one of the most important XVIIth century Sienese artist, Rutilio Manetti, of the Caravaggio lesson in Rome. The figure, in solemn pose, is invested with a golden light which, coming from behind, produces a dramatic, theatrical backlighting effect, emphasizing the gesture.
