Container or vessel for the etrog, the citrus fruit, specifically the citron, used in the Sukkot festival.
The etrog is one of the so-called “four species” present in this festival, along with the palm leaf, myrtle leaves and willow leaves. The citron is usually kept in containers made of silver, like this one, which is openworked and engraved with acanthus leaf motifs and crowned with an open flower.
This celebration, also known as the Feast of the Tents or of the Tabernacles, recalls the time when the Jews wandered through the desert and, to protect themselves, built huts. In memory of this, families build a hut or “suca” in the open air where they share time and food during the days that the festival lasts.
