Eucheuma denticulatum being grown at a Malaysian seaweed farm. Eucheuma species are used both as a food source and to produce carrageenan, which is used as a stabilising, thickening and gelling agent in desserts and other edible products.
Natural History Museum researchers are working with local experts to spot the early warning signs of pests and diseases that threaten seaweed crops. They are also searching for local temperature-resilient strains to develop for use in the farms.
This work is part of an initiative by the Global Centre on Biodiversity for Climate.
