Born in Ennis, Texas, Eugene Coleman, Sr. was an advocate, entrepreneur and creative who used his talents to enrich the community. He opened the first African American photography studio in San Antonio, the first studio to take pictures of African Americans in 1949. That same year, Mr. Coleman co-founded the San Antonio publication, SNAP, with Reverend Claude Black, Mr. G.J. Sutton, and Mr. Bernard Adams to cover community concerns. He had an innate ability to photograph African Americans in a way that properly captured their features. Mr. Coleman served a publisher of the SNAP for 50 years.
