At some point during his exile in Jeju Island, Kim Jeong-hui was deeply moved by the story of Kim Man-deok, a Jeju native and female physician who donated her entire fortune to save thousands of Jeju residents from famine in 1795. In tribute to Kim Man-deok, Kim Jeong-hui wrote the characters “Eunguang-yeonse,” which means the “light of grace disseminates to the world.”
