Left: Olivier Theyskens / Evening ensemble / Pink and white striped cotton / Fall 1997, Belgium / Lent by Oliver Theyskins
Ever since his 1997 debut collection, Gloomy Trips, Olivier Theyskens has been identified as a “gothic” designer. He admits that his early work was characterized by a certain “dark beauty,” but he is adamant that he was never inspired by goth subcultural styles.

Right: Chanel Haute Couture (Karl Lagerfeld) / Sleeveless evening dress with armbands and head piece / Black silk and tulle quilted with silk thread and black jet beads / Fall 2007, France / Lent by Chanel Collections
