Mountain scenery formed the staple subject-matter of Thomas Miles Richardson Jnr, the most gifted of
Newcastle painter Thomas Miles Richardson’s six artist sons. His watercolours enjoyed great popularity at the annual exhibitions of the Society of Painters in Water Colours and commanded high prices. This full-blooded romantic scene of unspoilt natural beauty in the wilder regions of Scotland reflects the widespread enthusiasm for the Highlands, which was cemented by Queen Victoria’s regular visits to Balmoral Castle from 1848 onwards.
