1980

National Museum of Australia

National Museum of Australia
Canberra, Australia

This Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles Championship tennis trophy was won by Aboriginal Australian player Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1980. She also won the title in 1971.

The presentation trophy is a sterling silver salver made by Elkington and Co of Birmingham, England in 1864, and is a copy of a pewter dish held in the Louvre in Paris.

The first women’s tournament at Wimbledon was held in 1884 and the salver, also known as the Rosewater Dish or Venus Rosewater Dish, was awarded to the Ladies’ Singles Champion in 1886. From 1949, winners of the championship were presented with a miniature replica of the trophy.
