The National Archives of Estonia

The National Archives of Estonia
Tartu, Estonia

The following data were recorded: the name of the recruit (first name and patronymic), age, height in arssins
and verssoks, shape of his face (round or elongated), eye colour (mainly blue or grey), hair colour (mainly light and brown) and shape of nose, date recruited, origin (county, manor, village), literacy (Estonian language reading ability is recorded surprisingly often), marital status (names of wife and children were also recorded, generally with the notation that the family remained living in their current location). The second to last column noted whether the recruit had
money. Usually these entries read: neimeet, meaning “none”, less frequently personal funds amount to 5 assignate-roubles. The last field should list the place to which the recruit was assigned, but it is mainly blank.
